NRG

Okay, let's get this out of the way pronto: NRG is a terrible name for any establishment. It sounds like some dreadful, dodgy nightclub playing "Ëœold skool classics,' doesn't it? Thing is, that's about the only real criticism we have of the place. NRG is a sports bar (there's a giant F1 car outside in case you were in any doubt) whose main function is really to serve beverages and let its patrons get on with watching whatever sport so happens to be televised at that particular time. However, they've also got a pretty extensive menu and an open kitchen. Which means only one thing — wherever there's food, there's a Time Out critic. The grubby, well-thumbed menu we were presented with really was an indication of things to come. Flicking through the greasy, laminated pages we were immediately accosted by the ridiculously named sections such as Substitutes (snacks), Lightweights (salads), All Time Greats (sandwiches and burgers), you get the drift — everything had a sports theme. Clever. And macho. So macho in fact that we got all caught up in the menu-inspired bravado and dived right in and ordered some "ËœMacho nachos' to start with. To share, of course. We're not barbarians. A huge, crimson, weird-shaped plate stacked full of crispy nachos, topped with chilli beef, thick and tasty guacamole, sour cream and oodles of melted cheese arrived promptly after our order was taken and, as far as nachos go, it was perfect. The chilli was packed with flavour and just on the right side of spicy and there was loads of it. Things had really got off to a great start. Next, it was the turn of our mains. It's pretty difficult to come to a place like this and not try their signature burger. So we ordered a sizzling beef stir fry in oyster sauce and an NRG burger with veal bacon and an egg. The stir fry was delivered piping hot and loaded with peppers, mangetout, broccoli and tender, delicious strips of succulent beef. The oyster sauce was deliciously sticky and, although it had a bitter tang, it certainly wasn't overpowering and really let the beef and the fresh vegetables do all the work. The burger was a piece of art. It was far too big for any human's mouth with egg, veal bacon, sauce and meat oozing through our fingers with every bite. Fantastic. The beef patty was thick, juicy and not too well done. To be fair, we weren't spoilt for choice when it came to dessert so we kept it simple and opted for the New Yorker's cheesecake and apple pie with vanilla ice cream. Neither were anywhere near the finest the city has to offer but they were stodgy and sweet. Job done. There you have it — if you want something that will forever culturally enrich your life, something to chat about at dinner parties with chums, then avoid NRG. If you want somewhere that's open to 2am, shows loads of sport and serves decent pub grub then you know where to go.
