Spaghetti House Club

A cosy taverna-style Italian with a simple, homely spirit Spaghetti House Club, another small neighbourhood spot amid JLT’s now burgeoning scene, is like a classic Italian trattoria, crammed into a modern-build Dubai spot. From the rustic white and wicker dining chairs, artfully-added exposed brickwork, open kitchen and taverna style arches and counter towards the back, Spaghetti House Club is charming, cosy and very welcoming. The menu is unapologetically simple and Italian, with spaghetti and pizza figuring highly on the list. We opted for the parmigiana melanzane and (DOP declared) buffalo mozzarella to start. The mozzarella was presented as an entire, whole cheese, with a few leaves of iceberg lettuce to garnish. we devoured this cheese with vigour, enjoying the nice variations in texture through it, from chewy to a touch of gooiness in the centre. The parmigiana di melanzane evidently hadn’t been sufficiently heated through to allow the cheese topping to melt and flavours to meld together. Yet, it was still very good, with a delicious richness in the flavour of the tomato sauce and a nice silkiness to the aubergine slices. Tempted by the more classic spaghetti recipes, we couldn’t resist the spaghetti frittata (or ‘spaghetti pie’). It arrived at the table looking almost exactly like a Spanish tortilla, unfortunately dressed with some sad looking salad leaves (which may have wilted from the heat of the ‘pie’). The frittata was an eggy tangle of spaghetti strands, flavoured simply with a little parsley and black pepper. Despite being bizarre and extremely filling, and despite my friend’s joke that the owner must really love his wife to have allowed her to put it on the menu, actually it really wasn’t bad at all. We also tried the Spaghetti Club pizza. Topped with porcini mushrooms, plenty of mozzarella and a little truffle essence, this was the best dish we tried, with a lovely base and elegant, uncluttered flavour combination from the buttery, woody mushrooms and subtle sense of truffle. When we visited, Spaghetti House Club was fairly busy with a notable majority of Italians at the tables, indulging in conversation with the owners. It is not perfect Italian food, but it is uncomplicated, tasty and affordable. It’s a place where I suspect the welcome would increase in warmth each time you visit, and the food is just as comforting.
