The Kebab Shop

When it comes to British fare, people in this town go a little mad. It doesn’t really matter what the dish is; be it curry, kebabs or fish and chips, just add the term ‘British-style’ in front, and it seems you’re almost guaranteed a mobbed restaurant. Billing itself as the only spot in town where you can get a ‘British-style’ kebab, Discovery Gardens’ new haunt, The Kebab Shop, is no exception. Given that the place has already garnered a bit of buzz, I wasn’t surprised to find it packed when my date and I visited, even though it was early on a week night. What was surprising, however, was the multicultural nature of the crowd. Nearly every demographic of Dubai was present, and though the menu boasted an assortment of curries and mixed grills, everyone was tucking into the same thing: the doner kebab, served on naan or pitta (you have a choice) and topped with salad. Not one to shirk tradition, my friend and I did the same. As kebabs go, this was a pretty satisfying assortment. Our naan resembled a warm, cushy blanket, and the slivers of meat on top were moist without being greasy (a marked improvement on the British version). Even the sliced vegetables on top were unexpectedly vibrant. We accompanied it with a side of peri-peri fries – they were so spicy that donning a radioactive suit prior to consumption would have been advisable (in other words, be warned). We also ordered a mixed grill. There are two to choose from: one fairly standard and the other offering meats in exciting marinades; we opted for the latter. The most intense of the meats present was the malai boti: chunks of scorching chicken breast seasoned with pepper and tongue-tenderising garam masala. I personally preferred the more gentle Irani boti – soft mounds of lemon-licked mutton. The Kebab Shop isn’t the type of place where you order several courses. It’s not pompous like that. It’s basically a lively spot for a no-nonsense kebab, and a reliable source for meaty takeaways. We recommend adding the number to speed dial – we certainly have.
