UPDATE: Basta Art Café is now called Arabian Tea House The Basta Art Café is a hidden gem tucked away behind the wind towers of the Bastakiya walls. Here, the only twitter is from the constant morning song of its resident birds. Centred around a leafy Damascene courtyard, which also poses as a prospering art gallery for local Emirati and Pakistani painters, the café is a menagerie of chalk-white basket chairs, artistically hung silk drapes that offer a respite from the heat, cracked plant pots and a comfy majlis. With a menu stuffed with beefed-up jacket potatoes, freshly groomed salads with aubergine, carrot, halloumi cheese or local seafood; salmon frittatas, and its signature Mediterranean Basta-chabatta sandwiches, it is the perfect place to while away an entire afternoon flicking through a good book. The café’s speciality, however, is its fine Moroccan teas and seasonal thirst quenching fruit shakes. In particular, its lime-mint mojito has enough of a sugar kick to get you tweeting along with the birds. The paintings aren’t half bad either.
