Bestro

Bestro is one of a handful of raw-vegan concepts to have popped up in Dubai in the past 12 months. It is, however, the only one of these to currently offer a menu that strictly adheres to both philosophies, rather than offering a plethora of dining options on the menu. Housed inside the restaurant section of Galerie Lafayette, Lafayette Gourmet, Bestro has a small counter area, a little dining space, and an equally diminutive shop, where you can purchase items such as nets for making nut milk and superfoods powders. The menu is also pretty short, but offers an interesting sounding mixture of pizzas, spaghetti, curries and Asian noodles. Don’t be fooled by that description though, since even the pizza bases and zucchini spaghetti strands are, like the rest of the menu, gluten- and sugar-free. The pizza proved to be a plate of little crackers, but darned delicious. The base-itself was crammed full of seeds giving it a lovely, full nuttiness and crunchy texture. On top sat a flavoursome salsa-like tomato sauce with a bright acid edge and a hint of garlic flavour, plus olives and mushroom. The mushroom slices had some of that squidgy textured brilliance of the cooked version, and also a concentrated umami punch. The Asian-style noodles were a mixture of thick, udon-shaped zucchini, and flat, thin, fettucine-like slices of raw carrot. Strangely the zucchini noodles, seemed to have all the chewiness and mouth feel of a ‘real’ noodle. Since this salad was drenched in a creamy dressing of almond and sesame, it also had plenty of flavour. Service seemed initially a little vague and confusing, but warmed up to become increasingly obliging, as well as swift. While there are no appetisers or side dish items available on the menu, the Italian-inspired recipes (pizza and spaghetti) are available as half sizes for children. It has to be said though, even the full size portions of dishes sampled did not seem like excellent value for the prices, which hover between the Dhs40 and Dhs50 mark. This style of food is certainly not for everyone, but you may well be surprised by how accessible and convincing it is, once you try it. As such, we recommend you give Bestro’s raw-vegan recipes a go, at least once. The bill (for one) 1x pizza (half portion) Dhs19 1x noodles Dhs48 1x juice Dhs28 Total (excluding service) Dhs95
