From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2010Pizza aficionados shouldn’t head to California Pizza Kitchen expecting an authentic Italian slice. It is, afterall, an American chain, one that launched in 1985 on the heels of a California pizza revolution forged by the likes of American celebrity chefs Alice Waters and Wolfgang Puck. Basically, California-style pizza is unique, just as New York and Sicilian-style pizza are. It’s thin, it’s usually a single portion and it’s known for its unusual toppings. In this respect, the Dubai Mall branch doesn’t disappoint. However, skip the starters, which are basically messy things that distract from the main affair. While there is a choice of crusts, the Neapolitan we ordered came out flaky and crisp. The barbecue pizza, meanwhile, is a nice mix of sliced red onions and some deliciously hammy-flavoured gouda. The shrimp scampi pizza is another winner, both tangy and garlicky and loaded with meaty pink prawns. Despite the fact this is an American pizza chain located in the basement of The Dubai Mall, California Pizza Kitchen still hits the spot.
