Leopold’s of London

One of the many new dining options in The Beach at JBR, gourmet café Leopold’s of London boasts an excellent setting with outdoor seating overlooking the shoreline. Despite being on two floors with a balcony area upstairs (also in view of the sea), for now it seems only the lower level is in use. Nevertheless, in addition to that ambient outdoor space, the café feels spacious and is decorated in a modern bistro style with marble table tops and leather upholstery in grey and dark wood skirting the display counters. There is definitely a slick, masculine and raw edge to the design, with exposed fittings lining the ceiling. Also pleasing to the eye is the vast selection of enticing cakes and high-tech coffee-making equipment, all on display. You are likely to receive a warm welcome here and find that service continues in a similarly friendly tone. There may be the odd mistake (such as only one sharing plate arriving for two) but on the whole, waiting staff are warm and make the experience of dining here a pleasant one. The menu will vary a little depending on what time of day you visit, with a more deli-style selection of sandwiches and bagels on offer during the afternoon. Still, whatever time you dine, you’ll be faced with a very appetising selection of modern European café food, including pasta, pizza and salads. The option to create a combo plate of different salads turned out to be a more than generous option, suitable for one as a healthy meal or two as a sharing appetiser. The selection of taster portions on the plate were all vibrant, colourful, healthy and delicious, including bright pink quinoa (tinted by its partner, beetroot) and a wholesome combination of roasted pumpkin with pearl barley. From the main course selection, the sumac-crusted salmon fillet was a lovely match, both in appearance and flavour (the raw citrus quality really enhanced the fatty fish). It also added a dynamic of textured crust, even if the fish itself was slightly overcooked. The black angus burger arrived and represented pure enticement on a plate. While the bun could have been toasted a little and the turkey bacon was chewy, the meat itself was succulent and the accompanying smoky onion sauce gave the burger a honey-sweet edge. In addition, there was plenty of good cheese and piles of fresh rocket leaves plus shredded red and white cabbage. The interior here is certainly sophisticated and the ambience convivial. And as for the food, well, it’s delicious, making Leopold’s of London a winning addition to the emirate’s culinary scene.
