From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2011Having been open for the last five years, The Californian still hasn't found its stride. Still overly-lit, bedecked in pine and an empty bar with one or two other tables of diners. If The Californian were a person it would be a rather depressed and lonely one. The lack of customers does make you feel for the staff, who do their uttermost to ensure you have a decent experience, and remain friendly throughout. Food is not too bad at all: the salmon is fresh and juicy, the steak sumptuous and the mocktails tangy and light. The buffet, which is, after all, the main purpose of the restaurant, is extensive. We know Californians are renowned for being laidback, but the only problem with this one is that its quietness makes us feel half-asleep.
